Cornish Karate - Senior Grades

Robin Whale
Shihan Robin Whale

Chief Instructor: Sandokai Karate Association

One of the patriarchs of Cornish Karate, Robin Whale was a member of the first karate club in Cornwall, the Redruth Karate Kai. Training since 1969, and a Black Belt since 1978, Robin originally practised Wado Ryu until his instructor formed his own style - Bujinkai Karate.

After many years with Bujinkai, Robin and some of the other local black belts formed the Sandokai Karate Association in 1992.

Robin's personal focus in his karate is the practical applications of the techniques.

Outside of the karate class, Robin works as a miner at South Crofty Mine, grows cacti, and collects comic book art and ephemera. An animal lover, Robin's kitchen has regular late night visits from a variety of the neighbourhood cats, hedgehogs and even a fox!
Duncan Webster
Sensei Duncan Webster

Senior instructor: Zen Shin Do Karate

Duncan started his martial arts career in 1974 studying Wing Chun Kung Fu for a short while. Eight years later he restarted his martial arts journey with Shotokan Karate, and trained for three years before the club merged with the Truro Zen Shi Do club.

Duncan has trained in other martial arts through attending courses and guest instructors at his club. He has practised Aikido, Ju-Jitsu, Tae Kwon Do and Kempo Karate to name but a few.

Over the years he has arranged numerous displays for the local council and school organisations to try and promote understanding of the martial arts, and Karate in particular.

Despite a busy life in the legal profession, Duncan always makes time for his Karate.
Rob Jones
Sensei Rob Jones

Chief Instructor: Kakougan Ryu

Another of the real "old-timers" of Cornish Karate, Rob Jones started training in 1973 in Wado Ryu Karate at the Redruth Karate Kai.

Rob’s interest at that time and for the next ten years was competition fighting, both light and full contact. Competition was more important than taking belt examinations so it wasn't until 1990 that he (finally!) took and passed his black belt exam.

A quiet and personal man, Rob continues to train and bring on the future generations of Cornish Karate-ka.
Kevin Cooke
Sensei Kevin Cooke

Principal Instructor: Samurai Shukokai Cornwall

Kevin Cooke began learning Karate in Exeter in 1992, at the age of 13, after developing delusions of grandeur from watching too many Bruce Lee films!

Kevin has competed in numerous national tournaments, achieving many successes, even travelling to Japan in 1999 to compete in the Shukokai World Karate Championships.

Kevin feels that learning Karate has been the most positive, life-changing event he has ever experienced.

When he is not working tirelessly for his clubs and students, Kevin runs the Covert Combat Lazertag company.
